My First Service with the Man of God Pastor Chris Pastor had hired a little hall in an area called Iyaro for fellowship meetings that held in the evenings on a weekday and I was invited to attend one of them by a dear friend at the time. I should mention for clarity that this was before Pastor left Benin to start Christ Embassy in Lagos and before the highly esteemed Rev Tom Amekhienan came to Benin City to Pastor the first Christ Embassy Church on Airport Road. I remember that the message he preached that evening was titled “Using the name of Jesus”. Apart from the fact that Pastor gave so many examples in that message that were so insightful, they were hilarious beyond measure. Pastor talked about people trying to cast out demons and that they would try to cast them into the bottomless pit. Pastor then explained with a hilarious demonstration that the bottomless pit had not been opened and so lots of demons would be wandering around shouting "where do you want us to go"?. I remember that the following week I dragged my mum, Sister and brothers to the meeting to hear what I was hearing and after the service, we bought every message on the tape stand at the back. I recall that I used to literally weep with laughter in each service and played those messages over and over till I wore them out. Some of you who are old school will remember Pastor sharing the testimony of God telling him about his first car, well, it was after one of these services. Pastor had stepped outside the hall with a number of brethren after the meeting and paid for them to take a taxi home. In the next service Pastor shared with us that God told him just afterwards “you just paid for your first car”. It wasn’t long after that that we saw the car. This and so many supernatural occurrences in those days were like water to a man left in the desert. Relating with Pastor was like hearing from Jesus, I remember going to see him after one of the meetings and I asked for an explanation of a verse in the bible from 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 that said, women should keep silent in the church and ask their husbands any questions they had. This was because someone I had invited to the meetings challenged me with those verses about sisters speaking in our meetings. Pastor looked at the verse, smiled and asked me, “what about those without husbands”? That night I considered Pastors question and all I could think of was Kabayo????? What manner of wisdom is this? Another time I went to see him at the new office because one of my uncles, in trying to convince me that the bible was full of errors and untrustworthy and to stop me from quoting Pastor and listening to messages all the time, gave me a book with the title, “The book of Jasher” It was meant to be the long lost book mentioned in 2nd Chronicles that had recently been "rediscovered" and which seemed to suggest inaccuracies in the bible. According to the book, Jashar was a contemporary of Moses, though slightly older based on the book, who went to visit Pharoah with Moses after the burning bush experience. According to the book he was actually the one who Moses instructed to stretch the rod over the Nile rather than Aaron as stated in the bible and even more significantly, was the man who led Israel after Joshua died. Pastor looked at the book, skimmed a few pages and then asked one question, how old would the Jasher mentioned here have needed to be to span those years from before Moses to after Joshua and then lead Israel for several years after the death of Joshua? I did some calculations afterwards and the wisdom of Pastor left me speechless. Besides that, in the light of Pastors answer, I discovered that no major historians like Josephus ever mentioned this Jasher nor was he recognised in the historic works I researched. It was my introduction to Satans frequent failed efforts to discredit God's divine word. Encountering such wisdom and insight from Pastor in my teenage years made it impossible for me to settle for human wisdom afterwards. I must also mention another of Pastor’s messages from those days that had such a great impact on me. That message was called Thoughts. It had 3 parts and was preached by Pastor in Lagos at the beginning of the nineties. I always remember a line from that message where Pastor was teaching about the need to be engaged with your mind when the Lord is moving as opposed to just being blank or unconnected as many thought at the time. Pastor said in line with receiving that, “Even if Jesus fell down from heaven before you and slapped you on your head so you got bald headed instantly, still it wouldn’t work, because your mind is needed”. In that message Pastor also talked about the difference between the thinking of the woman with the issue of blood and the others around her. She was thinking, “if I can touch the hem of his garment I will be healed”. Some others based on their thoughts were arguing with people and saying, “don’t touch him he’s my own”; don’t touch him, he’s my cousin!” Others were thinking, “Jesus, this your woollen cloth, so nice”. In all these thoughts, only one caused the power of God to flow. No one before that had intimated me on the importance of my thoughts as Pastor did. He made me realise that the renewal of the mind was not optional but vital for every Christian. I could go on and on listing examples of all I have seen and heard from Pastor over the last 30 years but I suppose I would take 30 years to do that write up. Pastor Sir, words cannot express the impact you have had in our lives over the decades. What we are celebrating is more than the passage of 30 years. We are celebrating a dispensation, a divine calling, a distribution of unique graces and a coat of many colours. Thank you Pastor for showing us that like Jesus, our starting point, even if its in the Manger, does not define us or our journey. Thank you Sir for proving that even if you start with Straw, you would end up with Gold. Thank you Sir for being the proof of this statement, what you have is enough. Thank you Pastor for yielding to such a great calling and creating a platform that has enabled us fulfil Gods dream for us individually and collectively. I love you Sir. 📣 IF YOU ENJOYED THIS, PLEASE LIKE & RE-SHARE, AND FOLLOW OUR SUPER-USER ACCOUNT FOR MORE ARTICLES LIKE THIS #BLWCelebrates30Years #PastorChukaSpeaks #UKVZ1
