THE BIBLE YESTERDAY AND TODAY! The story didn’t end with Williams Tyndale… Do you know? In 1523, Tyndale sought permission from Bishop Cuthbert Tunstall of London to translate the Bible into English, but Tunstall rebuffed him. Tyndale accepted the help of a London merchant and went to Germany in 1524. He never returned to England, but lived a hand-to-mouth existence, dodging the authorities. In 1525, he and his secretary began printing the New Testament which was completed in February 1526. Copies began to arrive in England about a month later. In October, Bishop Tunstall had all the copies he could trace gathered and burned at St Paul’s Cross Cathedral in London. Still they circulated! Glory to God!!! John Foxe’s Book of Martyrs tells the story of how when Tyndale was sailing to Hamburg to print the Book of Deuteronomy, he was shipwrecked and lost everything, ‘both money, his copies, and time’, and started all over again, completing the Pentateuch between Easter and December of the same year. Williams Tyndale was later captured, imprisoned for 16 months, found guilty of heresy, and on October 6, 1536, he was strangled and burned at the stake for translating the first English Bible. His friends were also apprehended by the authorities and died horrible deaths for the sake of the gospel. The drive to restrict the circulation of the Bible did not stop with Tyndale; it is still very much on. In spite of the opposition, men have always staked everything for the gospel, ensuring that the Bible remains relevant and we won’t be an exception in our time.
