4 IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTES OF A SUCCESSFUL CHRISTIAN: CHARACTER, INTEGRITY, DISCIPLINE AND EXCELLENCE. In the house of God, we're trained for life and ministry. This was the case for us as our esteemed Zonal Director began a series on 4 important things required for a successful Christian life; Character, Integrity, Discipline and Excellence. The opening scripture was from 1 Samuel 16:4-7, which showed the prophet Samuel on his way, as directed by God to anoint the next king of Israel. Here, we see that God had previously considered Eliab for the throne but was rejected (verse 7). There are certain character traits a Christian must develop, in addition to being graced and though we are born with excellence in our spirits, it doesn't always translate to excellence. In Genesis 49:4, we also see another example of how God sees people as was the case of Reuben who lost his right of the firstborn even though he had so many talents and abilities. His character however collided with his abilities—his character wasn’t refined enough for the perfect expression of his abilities because he was unstable and couldn't control his passions and his desires. Our Zonal Director admonished us by letting us know that the development and refining of one’s character is a very important spiritual activity one must develop and God has equipped us to do it. Reuben couldn't fulfill God's plan because his character was unstable and uncontrollable. WHAT IS CHARACTER? Character can be defined as the total combination of characteristics and behavior that distinguishes a person or a group. The Holy Spirit in us is an excellent spirit but we have to let it be expressed by our character and character, in turn, is controlled by our minds. This is why we must renew our minds always (Romans 12:2) 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NIV, MSG & TLB) tells us about discipline, using the example of an athlete— we know the importance of our own race; unlike the race of the athlete which gives a crown that doesn't last ours is for a crown that lasts forever. “You can't have a successful Christian life without the power of your mind”, our Zonal Director said and she encouraged us to develop a controlled behavior, which comes from exercise, reminding us that Reuben was ordered to stand aside because he refused to train himself. Let these things be in your mind: Character, Integrity, Discipline and excellence and you will live a successful Christian life. We thank our esteemed Zonal Pastor for such a glorious, life-transforming message and we look forward to the rest of these series. #CELVZ
