ℹINSIGHT with Pastor Uyi GIVE THANKS Many years ago, I was a fresh graduate from the University and desired a job. In those days, the National Electric Power Authority (abbreviated NEPA) in Nigeria was employing. I went to their main office in Benin City to pick up a pre-employment form. I wore a kind smile, a good attitude, and lots of optimism to the NEPA office. Armed with these, I approached the receptionist who directed me to meet with the officer in charge of the pre-employment forms. I still had my smile, good attitude, and optimism when I greeted the officer warmly. Yet, he barely acknowledged my greeting. Instead, he was rude and aggressive towards me. Although genuinely surprised, I kept my smile on and gently requested for the NEPA pre-employment form. My request seemed to get him even more agitated. He spoke to me brashly, “There’s no form. It’s no longer available. Leave my office.” This was a Wednesday morning. The day before, I had listened to one of Pastor’s messages via my “Walkman” (you know, the one you slot cassettes into) where our Man of God, Rev. Dr. Chris Oyakhilome had been exhorting on giving thanks in spite of circumstances and situations. But, as I left the NEPA office, I felt a strong temptation to feel bad and downcast. Just then, the Holy Spirit brought Pastor’s words to remembrance, and instantly I switched my praise on –rather than feeling sad, I started giving thanks to God – profusely. The more that officer came to mind, the more I gave thanks. Soon, it was evening and as my tradition was, I headed to church for the Mid-Week Service. I had always entered into the church hall via the main entrance. Being new to church at the time, I never considered using the small side entrance before. However, this particular Wednesday, for some unknown, unexplained reason, I decided to take the side entrance into the church hall. As soon as I lifted my step into the side entrance, I noticed someone coming out in a hurry. I raised my head to note the direction the person was coming from, so as to make way. As I looked, guess who I saw? That same officer I had earlier met at the NEPA office in the morning. Instantly, we both recognized each other and simultaneously burst into laughter. He took me aside, apologized excessively, and asked me to come by his office the next day for the pre-employment form. The next day, he gave me the form, assisted me to fill it, and sent in my application with the batch that was ready to go immediately to their headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria. Also, he gave me his office phone number and those of his colleague in Abuja to facilitate the follow-up on my application. As I left his office, I remembered Pastor’s message again, and the specific scripture that reads: “They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.” Jonah 2:8-9 Beloved, it is still our month of thanksgiving. It pays to give thanks. God bless. #KINGINGwithPastorUyi FOLLOW THIS SUPERUSER ACCOUNT
