How I encountered Aliens from space. Several years ago I watched an advert for a movie that was to be shown on a TV Station called NTA Benin, the city where I was living at the time. It was a movie about aliens invading the earth and the trailer showed clips of them dropping on people like salad cream on freshly grated cabbages and carrots in Celebrity Chef 2016. This feature from Hollywood, which at the time was churning out lots of B movies with memorable names like "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" and "It came from Outer Space", etc had tag lines in the trailer like, Who is safe? Who will survive? A terrifying invasion from space!!!!! Mankind must fight for survival!!! A menace from the far side of the Galaxy!!! My 9 year old imagination was stirred as I liked all things Alien and wanted to be an Astronaut. The appointed date for the movie to be shown arrived but alas, my pleas to my parents and older brother to be allowed to watch it fell on deaf ears and I was relegated to that hateful place called my bedroom. I should mention that it was the Harmattan period which was quite cold at the time so we had these very thick blankets (Duvets) on our beds to keep us warm but what need had I of blankets when there was so much movie heat in the living room. I couldn't sleep for thoughts of how to watch it and kept my door open in hopes of at least hearing part of the movie through the corridor linking my bedroom with the living room. When the movie finally started, I heard as my parents rose and went to bed. With this relaxation of film security measures I seized the opportunity and crept quietly to the living room where I secreted myself behind one of the couches and began to watch. It was shocking. The aliens were nothing more than living stomachs that stationed themselves in trees, on roofs and on ceilings and dropped down with utter impunity on any citizen hapless enough to walk under the spot where they were suspended. Once they landed on the person, it was all over. They swiftly consumed their victims. Bullets didn't seem to affect them and even soldiers fell prey to them like crickets against foxes. About 15 minutes into the movie, my brother turned, spotted me behind the couch and exclaimed, what are you doing there? My wimpy reply about just wanting to see part of the movie was met with a harsh "sit on the chair then". I emerged and sat on one of the couches, thankful to have been permitted by him to watch the movie. I felt such a surge of love and affection for my older brother then as I realised he cared. He really cared. I could have hugged him. Upon settling down, I watched in full HD (Horror and Despair) as Actor after Actor was consumed by the Aliens, I felt like getting up from the couch and hiding behind it, still wanting to watch but horrified beyond belief. Nobody in the movie was safe, your favourite actors, hated actors, antagonists and protagonists alike fell into the maws of these mobile stomachs. I discovered that "Actor no dey die" did not apply to this movie. The movie became a battle by the survivors to avoid these space creatures that dropped from the most unexpected places onto unsuspecting perambulators. At one point I noticed as I was staring at the screen in SD (Shock and Derision) as yet another actor became a snack, that my brother was watching me with a smile but that didn't really register in the face of what I was feeding my mind through my eyes. Subconsciously, I registered the fact that he got up and left the living room only to return a few minutes later where he continued watching the movie. What I didn't know was that he had gone to his room, taken all the blankets and bedsheets he could find, opened the door to my room and hung this mass of cloth between the top of the door and the doorframe so that when the door was pushed open, all the blankets would descend on the unsuspecting victim below. Well, the movie finally rounded up with almost every actor consumed by the Aliens and the survivors standing dazed around their decimated city hoping it was over. For me, I was still absolutely terrified and could not summon the strength or courage to get up from the couch. I sat there in a daze of fear till my brother yelled, "Go to Bed". Reluctantly, I rose to my feet and walked out of the living room fully aware that there was death everywhere. As my mind replayed scenes from the movie, I wondered if there were any aliens outside our house in the trees or on the roof and as fear took a tighter hold of me, I made up my mind with every step towards my room that if I was asked to go outside to close a gate, take clothes off the line etc, I was going to yell NO WAY. I got to the door of my room which was slightly ajar and stood there not wanting to go in as the room was dark but my brother shouted GOOD NIGHT from the living room. With that command, I couldn't stall any longer. I pushed the door fully open to enter AND ONE OF THE ALIENS I HAD JUST BEEN WATCHING DECIMATE A CITY LANDED ON ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now let me try to explain what happened to me at that point. Firstly, I literally felt like my heart stopped and every vital part of me shut down. Secondly, People talk about your life flashing before your eyes at life threatening moments but that wasn't what happened here. My life was too terrified to flash before any eyes. Normally, in the presence of death, the natural human reaction would be to fight for life or flee but due to my fellowship with the movie and the helplessness of the characters in it against the aliens, I KNEW there was no point fighting. In hindsight, the scripture that comes to mind is from Numbers 13:33 33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. Dear reader, I remember as clearly as though it was yesterday that I was unable to scream, beg, cry, call for help, fight or run!!! I just stood there paralysed. My 9 year old conclusion upon finding myself inside one of the Aliens was simple and straightforward. IT WAS OVER. They had got me. With world weary resignation I accepted that I was dead. Only one thought, a plea actually, went through my young mind to the creature who was about to devour me like a child would devour ice cream on a very hot day. The thought was, "Please eat me quickly, I don't want to suffer". As I stood there waiting for death, I heard something that didn't make sense. It was laughter, laughter from behind me!!!!!!! It didn't make sense. Here I was, being eaten without Maggi, garnishing or Tomato Ketchup by an alien which had me dead to rights and someone was laughing. Suddenly logic kicked in and I realised through my heart beats pounding in my ears that what was resting on me was several blankets. Rage took a hold of me and I flung the blankets down. The surge of love I felt earlier for my brother was subsumed by rage and I took off after him. That was the only time I chased my brother around angry enough to fight him as he was twice my size. He kept running and laughing till I was exhausted and staggered back to my room somewhat relieved that I was still alive but with no desire to watch any more sci-fi or horror films. A few years later when I gave my heart to Christ, a scripture became very meaningful to me. Job 3:25 25 For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me. The effect of those clothes landing on me was significant only because of the knowledge I had received through the movie. At any other time I would have known they were just clothes but my perception was coloured by wrong information. What are you feeding your mind with? In the time of testing, that is the fuel you will have to burn. Knowledge of your position in Christ will always control your response to external stimuli and impressions. Let the word of God disable fear in your life as our Man of God Pastor Chris teaches. Refuse to feed fear through what you hear, watch or read. Be selective about what information you allow in to your mind. Feed your mind with the right things so that when anything tries to drop on you, you will have the drop on it. Situations will find that it is not the heated frying pan below that is at risk but the thing that drops on it. Now we are looking forward to celebrating our Man of God Pastor Chris and things can only get better from here. All that will drop on us during this period is God's greater blessings. God bless you! Here’s a new track from Frank Edwards. It’s titled Defender and is a smooth groovy track that acknowledges Jesus’ love for his children and the victory he brought us, and now we fight from victory not for victory. It’s a testimony I’m sure many can relate with. Listen, dance and remain blessed.
