She kept to the sidewalk, bumping into few people who were too distracted to notice a frightened child running for her life. The night was dark and stormy. It was raining hard, fast, and heavy. Deafening sounds of the downpour, thunders, and honking cars choked the air as commuters scrambled to get home in good time. It was past ten o' clock. Matale was desperate. She got off the sidewalk, and hid herself between a container and a car wreckage. Her breath collided against fear spasms. Each breath felt like sharp darts within her lungs. She was wet, cold and tired. But, she remained alert. That short bearded man could show up any minute... He had cornered her just outside her Aunty's shop at the time of total blackout, and his large puffy hands had covered her mouth before she could call out for help. Aided by the cover of night, he had dragged her towards an old battered blue Peugeot. But his tightened grip on her arm momentarily slackened when he heard a voice call out his name, "Larry, what are you doing?" That was her moment. She had jerked her arm loose while her captor darted his head this way and that, searching for the one who had called his name. She ran. Matale had been running since. And now, as she hid away from sight wondering how far away from home she was, she heard that voice again. But this time it called out her name, "Matale, what are you doing?" Matale moved slightly, raising her head from where she had been hiding, to get a better view of the environment and to find the one who knows her name. Midnight struck. With laboured breath, tear shrieked eyes, and a shivering panic, Matale waited to hear that calming voice again. This time, it said "Go home Matale. He's gone." She saw no one. Yet she knew he must be right because the calmness of his voice enveloped her like warm blanket on cold skin. The little girl stepped out on the street. Matale knew she was safe.
